The 1928 movie palace Telegraph Avenue forgot until it didn't. 2,800 cap, gold-leaf everywhere, balcony that feels like a balcony. BART 19th St drops you three blocks west. The bigger Fillmore — same caliber of touring act, twice the room, half the SF price ceiling.

Summer-only. Open-air. 6,900 capacity scooped into a Stanford hillside since 1937. Caltrain to Palo Alto + Marguerite shuttle if the show ends before 11pm, otherwise drive in early because 280 will punish you. Booked through Stanford Live — the Bay's only real outdoor amphitheater that doesn't feel corporate.

Marin's room. Three hundred capacity, downtown Mill Valley, Bob Weir co-owns. The drive over the Golden Gate is part of the ticket. Acts who could fill the Fillmore play Sweetwater when they want a small night — songwriter sets, surprise drop-ins, Grateful-adjacent reunions. Lytton Square parking fills fast.

Pacific Avenue, Santa Cruz, 800 cap. The room where punk, surf-rock, and college-radio acts have routed through since 1976. Eighty miles south of SF — make it a drive day. Downtown garages two blocks. Meters end at 6pm. Underground in the literal sense: low ceilings, sticky floors, no chrome.

Why The Fillmore still matters

Every show at The Fillmore ships a free hand-drawn poster at the door. Not a digital reprint — an actual screen-printed object, drawn that week, designed by a working illustrator on a rotating commission list that goes back to Bill Graham's first season in '65.

That's not nostalgia. It's the reason 1,315 capacity still matters in a market that's tilted toward 4,000-cap multi-purpose rooms. Fillmore programs for the people in the room, not the spreadsheet — and every touring act that goes through SF still routes here because of it.

NO. 02 / THE LINEAGE

The Bill Graham hierarchy

The Fillmore and Bill Graham Civic share a name and a lineage. An act plays Fillmore on the rise — 1,315 cap, packed, intimate. They graduate to BGCA on the return: 7,000 cap, Civic Center, four times the floor.

It's the only city in the country where the same operator runs the mid-tier room AND the arena-adjacent room with the same booking philosophy. That's why the same touring artist can do both nights in the same week and have the bigger room feel like the same scene — just bigger.

NO. 03 / SEASONAL

Why Frost is a summer-only ritual

Frost Amphitheater is open-air, 6,900 capacity, scooped into a Stanford hillside since 1937. The booking window is May through September — the Peninsula doesn't have the climate for outdoor shows the other seven months.

So when Frost is on, every weekend is a pilgrimage. Caltrain to Palo Alto + Marguerite shuttle works if the show ends before 11pm, otherwise drive in early because 280 will punish you. It's the Bay's only real outdoor amphitheater that doesn't feel corporate — and the seasonal window is what protects that.

NO. 04 / CROSS-BAY

Oakland Arena — when Oakland goes arena-size

Oakland Arena is 19,596 capacity. Bill Graham Civic is 7,000. Same touring act, two different tours — the cap differential is the whole story. SZA does BGCA on the buzz cycle and Oakland Arena on the victory lap. E-40 routes Oakland every time because the East Bay is the gate.

Soundboard tells on themselves: BGCA is a converted civic hall, low ceiling for the room size, mids get muddy on the floor. Oakland Arena is a proper arena bowl — built for hockey, tuned for hip-hop and the championship-era trail-off. The BART ride home from Coliseum after a sold-out night is the East Bay's quietest 20 minutes.
